November 7, 2020
On Saturday, November 7, 2020, Awesome Ambitions wrapped up the Awesome College Prep Series with Shanelle Smith, President and Founder of HBCU Walking Billboard. HBCU Walking Billboard is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that promotes awareness of, attendance to, and graduation from Historically Black Colleges & Universities. What started as a simple t-shirt campaign to accompany an 8th grade English project, has grown into college preparation workshops, career readiness training, ongoing student support, and a national social media campaign!
ANYONE can be an #HBCUWalkingBillboard:
1. Prospects: Current elementary, middle, and high school students who will one day consider an HBCU
2. Rookies: College students currently attending an HBCU
3. Alum: Proud graduates of any HBCU
4. Allies: Supporters who did not attend an HBCU but recognize their inherent value.
Shanelle led an engaging session on the origins, meanings, and importance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Our Awesome Ambitions Girls learned about the increasing diversity, quality education, amazing athletic opportunities and scholarships offered at HBCUs. Shanelle also discussed the importance of accreditation and researching and identifying colleges that will meet individual career goals. She wrapped up the presentation with a college panel of current and recent graduates from Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Awesome Ambitions would like to thank Shanelle Smith for the amazing presentation.
